When I retired in 2012, I was concerned about how I would use my time. After working all my life, the thought of sitting around watching TV, or reading a book in the daytime was alien to me. I didn’t really have any hobbies and I was certainly not a sports person. I would like to have been a sports fisherman, but I do not have a boat, which is a disadvantage.
In 2013, I decided to do some volunteering to occupy my time in a positive way. The organization that I joined has all sorts of volunteer jobs such as drives, walks, home visits, document assistance, income tax preparation, technology support, and many more. Since I like driving, I decided to be a part of the drivers team, taking (mainly) seniors to various medical or dental appointments.
Many of the clients have special needs such as wheelchairs and walkers; others need a helping hand or positive reassurance, especially if they are nervous or stressed about their appointment. All of them, however, have a life story and are usually pleased to relate their adventures to you.
Listening is an important part of the volunteering experience – I would say a definite necessity. Sometimes, instead of driving them straight home, I take them via the tourist route where they can see the mountains, the sea, and the beaches. Most find it a real pleasure to see the splendour and beauty of our Pacific coast. Some of their remarks are, “I haven’t been here for a long, long time”, and, “Wow! It is so beautiful here.” They are so appreciative, and it warms the heart.
Volunteering is a satisfying and joyous experience and I highly recommend it.
